Yet another passing

Today it was Glenn Frey. I was born in the ‘70s (73 if you really need to be that nosy). By the time I had my first radio, The Eagles had already broken up, and Don Henley and Glenn Frey were just solo artists. In all actuality, my father was in the army, and we were stationed in Germany. And the only English radio stations were controlled my the Army. So, I never heard any Eagles. I did hear a good deal of The Heat Is On, and there were a couple of Don Henley songs that I remember.

Btw, they did reunite again in the ‘90s…

So I was listening to real Christmas music last week…

So, last week, I was listening to Handel’s Messiah. Fired it up on the bus to work. And I fired it up again on the way home from work. By the time I got off the bus, it was over. I noticed that there were at least two drunks thrown off the bus. And I didn’t notice the drama at all, and I didn’t care.
Maybe I should listen to more classical music on the bus…

Ok, so I started listening to real Christmas today....

I finally broke down. I finally fired up my mp3 player and put some Christmas on to play. No, this wasn't the Black Album. Though Enter Sandman is a necessity to keep my sanity after hearing The Little Drummer Boy and Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer ad nauseum. There are a few other Christmas songs that I can tolerate and even like, though I'm intentionally limiting my exposure to them to keep it that way...

Anyway, I'm listening to Christmas Music. And religious music at that. I'm listening to The Messiah: A Sacred Oratorio. By a Mr. George Frederic Handel...

So I bought some music…..

Many years ago, I saw this video (I can’t even remember where. Could’ve been MTV, VH1, or PBS…). And very recently, I remembered it, and searched youtube for it. I like it so much I bought it from Spamazon. I don’t have an iPod (I like my Man-Card), and digital music from Soamazon isn’t drm’ed, so I can back it up locally, and copy it to my phone. BTW, this isn’t the first time I’ve bought music:

So I went to the doctor last week….

I know I haven’t been posting as often as I used to. I mainly Facebook now, though I’ll still use this as my original soapbox in the Internet. With Facebook’s IPO royally tanking, and talk of Facebook’s eventual decline (a la MySpace), I may come back to this blog. I’m not abandoning it. I just may not be as active on it…

Having said that, I went to my doctor’s office last week. As a type I diabetic, every check-up comes with an A1C blood test. 10 years ago, when I was initially diagnosed, this test was done with a full blown blood draw (they did a finger-stick in the office to check my sugar at the time, too). Ususally, they also did a full work-up (ie cholesterol, liver, thryoid, etc), which is also how I was diagnosed 4 years ago with hypothyroidism (which runs in my mother’s family). Nowadays, they can do the A1C on a fingerstick, too. This was the first doctor’s visit in a while where I could get away with not getting bled. But I was told to lose weight….

I’m still here….

Boss had a baby boy about three weeks ago, and I’ve been working a lot. In and of itself, that’s wouldn’t be a problem, but I’m the one who gets the calls from my co-workers whenever something goes wrong, and that gets old real fast. I guess that’s what I get for being there for so long. But that also means less posting here. Though to be honest, I’m more into Facebook…

• I saw some of the Stanley Cup playoffs last week. There was a lot of extra-curricular activity, though I think Raffi Torres’ 25 game suspension will tone that down. You’re going to be an example. You can either set the example, or we can make an example of you. The choice is yours. Although some of games I’ve seen would indicate the officials need to grow a pair, too.
• Wiped my tower. A month ago. And I’m still restoring it. I think my next purchase at Worst Buy will be a another Tb sized drive. While I do most of my web surfing & video streaming on my laptop, the tower still has plenty of oomph in it, and all my games work on it.
• My brother got a kindle fire. He had the original kindle before. Now I have it. The first book I ‘bought’ for it was Aesop’s fables. I hear the Pierce County Library now supports the kindle, so I suppose I should check out more books.
• I finally got the cable bill paid off. What happened was I fell behind one month, and I was just paying the past due amount every month. But I finally paid it off, and my bill is now current. T-Mobile was also paid off, once and for all, and I will never go back to them again. They have an ok network, and some good phones. But the employees are ass-holes and incompetent clods… Besides, my Sprint bill is less than T-Mobile for the same service, and they haven’t pulled a bait-and-switch on me…

Ok, that was only because I wanted to post a video. To be honest, I never heard this song when it first came out (IIRC Love and Rockets was originally an alternative band, and they weren’t on the radio stations that I was listening too. The very first Love and Rockets song i heard was So Alive, and at the time I hated it….

They still rock….

So I’m about to retire for the night, and I’ve got Late Nite with Jimmy Fallon on. And tonight, The Moody Blues are performing. To be honest, this is a band I haven’t really followed. Ever. But they sounded good (I remember Nights In White Satin on oldie’s station growing up) and what I heard on Jimmy Fallon sounded similar. But what matter most is that they sounded good….

Ok, everybody should know by now that in the ‘80s, KISS ditched the make-up, and became yet another hair-band for the most part. With the execption of Revenge (which is the best KISS album. Period). Case in point:

Amy Winehouse is dead. I never really listened to her music, but I heard of her self-destructive behavior (which is part of the reason why I didn’t listen to her…). So sad. She had the talent to go far. But she also had the self-destructive behavior…. Questions should be asked when one of your biggest hits is titled ‘Rehab”, and the main line is ‘NO, No, No’…

May she now have the peace that she cou;dn’t apparently find in this life…

Why didn't I hear this growing up?

I though I heard once or twice on the radio when I was in high school, and no more. I thought the tune was catchy and a bit uplifting.

After those 2-3 times on the radio, I never heard it again. Until I was at the mall the other day, and the played it over the intercom, and I Soundhounded it (Soundhound infinity was a free app of the day at the Spamazon app store a while back, and I got it).

Very good song. Too bad Micheal Been passed away, and he didn’t get the mainstream success he deserved. In the ‘80s, a lot of bands put out even worse music, and saw more success than him….

Heineken Tastes Like Piss…

Actually, I shouldn’t say that. Corona tastes like bottled urine. The last time I had a Heineken, though, I had a headache that lasted till about 4 in the afternoon the next day. And I only had a beer and a half. I;ll stick with Guinness or Henry’s, thank you…

One wonders what drugs they were on. Heineken may be Dutch urine, but I don’t think ‘shrooms are part of it. Good song, great band. Questionable beer, and what the hell were they on when made the video? And why didn’t they share it?

Firefox 4 is out. I highly recommend it. It does seem faster than previous versions.  It is certainly better than Internet Explorer. I’ve been using the public beta for about the past month, and while I’ve been impressed with the overall performance, I was having a few issues with the extensions. I ended up getting rid of quite a few of them that didn’t work.  There are a couple of others that aren’t being updated fast enough, but i figured out how to make them work (hint: the .xpi file that the extension comes as is a .zip file. You can can simply unzip it, and there is a certain file that you can open in your favorite text editor and you can change the maximum Firefox version…) I don’t have the specifics now on how to do it. Maybe later, I’ll post it…

Firefox is available in a mobile version (for Android). I used to try it, but I found for Android, your best bet is Dolphin Browser HD. Not as many plug-ins as there are for Firefox, but it gets the job done (in fact, my boss thinks it’s even faster than his iPhone, which says something since my phone isn’t even supposed to run Android….). For those of you stuck with a Windows Mobile 6.x device, I’d have to go with Opera 10. Or better yet, get a new phone….

RIP Gerry Rafferty

It’s a little bit late, but Gerry Rafferty has gone to the Beer Volcano… For thos of you who don’t know who he is:

Video Killed the Radio Star may have been the very first music video on MTV, but IIRC, this was the second. I first heard it some 20+ years after it originally came out on a mall’s intercom when I was walking though it. As old as it is, I still like it…
