I know it's a wee bit late, but....

The Seahawks are NFC Western Division Champs again! They had a really kick-ass first half to this season, but they've been choking of late. I can understand them getting beat by the Cardinals (after all, they don't wear helmets and pads, they wear mitres and choir dress, and you really can't beat up clergy). The Chargers game, on the other hand, should have been won, were it not for that one play in last thirty seconds. But you go to hand it to the defense for keeping us in the game, even when the offense wasn't able to put points on the board (the saying goes, "The offense sells the tickets, but it's the defense who wins games.")

At least the Seahawks will get one more week to choke. Although the M.O. for the Seahawks in the playoffs has been either to choke in the first round, or go all the way to the Super Bowl. And the choke.

But, anyday, football is still better than The New World Order (Mind-Control Division). All the times I try to watch Baseball, I end up falling asleep on the couch. When I wake up, all my aluminium foil is gone, I have thoughts that Belgium actually does exist, and AT&T Ellen Norberg (a known Mind-Control Agent) is always nearby.

Happy Holiday to all

I hope the great Christmas pirate Santa and The Flying Spaghetti Monster treated you all well last night (you do know that Santa is a Pirate, right?). In my extended family, we practice 'secret santa' (wherein you draw one name out of a hat, and that is the only person you need to worry about. A cost-effective way to celebrate Christmas). This year I drew my uncle David. I think I made him regret it. He emailed his list, and I got him everything on it (if I can afford to do it, I will usually stick to peoples' wish lists. That's what they tell my they want, and that's what they shall receive). So it's not what he got, it's how it was wrapped. I don't believe in the wimpy girly-man scotch tape. I use nothing less than three inch packing tape. And I covered every available seam and crease with it. There is a certain joy in giving (far greater than recieving), but there is also a lot of fun in watching your recipient victim try to unwrap your present.

My plunder this year:

  1. A page a day puzzle calender.
  2. 36 AA batteries.
  3. 4 AA rechargable batteries (and a charger). From another party than the previous, and they didn't coordinate. C'est la vie, I guess.

  4. An LED flashlight.
  5. A can of SPAM.
  6. A South Hill Mall gift certificate.
  7. A Federal Reserve Gift Certificate (accepted anywhere and everywhere).
  8. A Target Gift Card.
  9. 2 visa gift cards.
  10. The customary bag of socks (I actually do appreciate socks for Christmas).
  11. A survival kit. Complete with survival blanket, whistle, flashlight, matches, and AFDB.
  12. A couple of old, anitique glass treasures from my Grandmother. She had already wrapped them up, and they were distributed by lottery. I got a couple of glass dishes, one being from c. 1900 and is a collectors item, the other one I don't know where it cam from, but it is now my candy dish.

So the question to you, loyal blog reader is:

What kink of loot did you score this year? Or are you still waiting for the rest of your Pirate band to get together to go plundering?

The truth about Santa Claus

Some facts and myths relating to our favorite morbidly obese Christmas character:

Santa:

  1. Lives out in the middle of nowhere.
  2. Works only one night a year.
  3. Has the munchies so bad that he has to eat milk and cookies at every stop he makes.
Conclusion:

Santa smokes pot.

Santa:

Has to visit a minimum of 23,148 homes a second.

Conclusion:

Santa drinks Jolt.

Santa:

Has delusions of toy making elves and flying reindeer.

Conclusion:

Santa drops acid.

Santa:

Is a white guy who wants your children to sit in his lap.

Conclusion:

Santa is really Micheal Jackson

Rudulph:

Has a very red nose.

Conclusion:

Rudolph is an alcoholic

(Side note: after last Christmas, the other reindeer staged an intervention, got Rudolph into AA, and he's been clean and sober ever since. However, this means no more red nose, and therefore until the sleigh get equipped with GPS, Santa will only be flying on VFR).

Myth:

Santa has elves to make his toys, yet you only seem to get underwear for Christmas.

Fact:

The real elves are in the Lord Of The Rings. Those aren't elves. They're the Underpants Gnomes. Which also explains why you get so much underwear for Christmas.

Farewell, ORDB

Slashdot is reporting that the Open Relay Database is shutting down (More here). Basically, the volunteers who ran it have to focus on other things-it is important to remember that these people also have jobs, families, and lives to attend to, and they should be saluted for the service they provided to the internet.

I still use rbls to filter my mail. I use Sorbs, the AHBL, and the meaning of zen.

Florida 1, AOHell 0

The Florida state AG has settled with AOHell (here) over problems with customers not being able to cancel their accounts. A copy of the settlement is available here (yes it is a pdf file).

I was with AOHell for all of one month. When I bought my Gateway, it came with a free year of service from them, but I decided to go with a real isp. Fortunately, I never had problems with them wrongfully billing me or reactivating my account. I have been called upon to service several of my friends' (and employers') computers, and I'm always amazed about how much faster they are after I uninstall the AOL software. To call it bloatware is an understatement. There was one box in particular, which ran some unsupported OS provided by the Anti-Christ, that had 4 different versions install at the same time. Talk about the Three Stooges Syndrome. I was amazed it could even boot to a desktop.

Happy Holiday

For those of us of the Pastafarian Faith, tomorrow begins Holiday, which will last all of December and January. Being a devout Pastafarian (complete with flimsy moral standards), I would like to wish you all a happy holiday. While I'm at it, Happy Hanukkah, happy Kwanzaa, and may your Godless, Pagan Winter Holiday be without suffering.

Greg quits....

Greg Page (the man in the yellow shirt) is quitting The Wiggles. Last year, The Wiggles made more money than Nicole Kidman and AC\DC put together. Maybe Brian Johnson should audition to replace him. And you couldn't go too wrong with Angus Young in the group, either. My roommate many years (who was also my younger brother) baby-sat our two nephews and niece, and usually had The Wiggles on in the living room. One particular day, I was in my room, and I had my TV on in the background. Out in the living room, they started singing a song involving Captain Feathersword, and in my room I had On The Record on. Greta Van Susteren is really Captain Feathersword.

It's time for the Apple Cup

The U Dub is visiting Moo U for the Apple Cup. I am a fair and balanced person. I mock both schools equally:

  • There was a terrible fire at the UW library. They lost all their books. Even the ones that hadn't been colored yet.
  • There has been talking of putting artificial turf in Martin Stadium. If not for one key issue: Where would they let the WSU cheerleaders graze.
  • The most commonly heard phrase among UW alumni: "You want fries with that?"
  • The most effective way of keeping a Cougar out of your yard: simply erect a goal post.

Something to make note of when shopping this holiday season.

Here's something to take note of when you're shopping for The Godless, Pagan Winter Holiday. Christmas never was a Christian Holy day It was celebrated long before Christianity came along, and it has become so commercialized that it is now more a secular holiday than a religious one. But that issue is for another blog posting, another day, and possibly another blog.

Anyway, Wally World in discontinuing layaway. I never used layaway when I did Christmas shopping. I have never been one of much means, and I will not go into debt for someone's Christmas present. If I had to use layaway to get someone's Christmas present, then I didn't get them that. This may sound a wee bit harsh, but materialism isn't where it's at.

My strategy for quick and painless Christmas shopping is:

  1. Identify who you're shopping for. My family has practice Secret Santa (wherein you put all the family members' names into a hat, and draw one name, and that's the person you shop for) for almost twenty years. Shopping for that one person (although I do also get something special for my parents and my grandmother as well) does keep costs and stress down.
  2. Set a budget. And stick to it. I have my own bills to pay, too. Just because the holiday come around doesn't mean that my/your creditors are going to give a month reprieve.
  3. Scout ahead. Before you actually go shopping, go around, look inside, and take a mental note of who has what. This can be accomplished in the off-peak hours, and you can avoid the crowds and find the lowest price.
  4. Have a Christmas Mule handy. I don't have a car, so all my holiday shopping is done on foot. My roommate doesn't have a car either so when one does his shopping, the other one comes along with an empty backpack to help carry stuff home.
  5. Set a time limit. If you can't find what they want, then get them a gift card (interesting article on that here). I always say that if they can't find it at Target, then they don't deserve it anyway.

An Emergency guide we all can use.

The Bill Parcells guide to handling T. O. emergencies. Personally I think just shit-canning TO would do a lot to imrove the Cowboys performance. He's not a team player (and football is a team sport), he skipped out of most of training camp (with IMHO a fake injury), sleeps through meetings (by his own admission), cops attitudes with coaches (by his own admission), and when he takes to the field, drops The Key Pass that can win the game. On the other hand, the Cowboys upcoming game with the Cardinals will be a doozy. Especially if the Cardinals wear their mitres instead of their helmets.

Bill Gates Embraces the Penguin (well a green lizzard more exactly)

The Anti-Christ and Novell, publisher of SuSE Linux (yes, I know that's the old spelling, but I like it better), have announced a partnership. Due to hardware issues, I usually am an exclusive windows user, but on occasions when I can dabble in Linux, I use SuSE. I hope this means good things for all. A lot of of the freeware and oss I use now is basically windows ports from Linux. Who needs Photoshop when you've got the GIMP?

Oh, and btw, I just discovered that Firefox 2.0 has a speelchequer.

Cardinals win it.

The Cardinals win the World Series. They are now the tops of The New World Order (Mind-Control Division). Although I think they were still screwed. Being cardinals, they should've at least been allowed to take to the field wearing their mitres.

Tuesday, October 24, 2006

It's here!

Firefox 2.0 has officially been released. Download it here. I got mine yesterday, when someone slashdotted that it had been released (actually, it was during the five minutes that they had the ftp server address up before mozilla asked to pull the link). I already got mine.

A lot of the extensions I was using in Firefox 1.5 were old (some of them were written for pre 1.0), and it was only because I was using the Mr. Tech Local Install extension that I could use them (via the disable version check). So, I finally decided to install new ones. A lot of the old ones I was using were abandoned, and instead the authors had written new ones instead. There are still a few old ones that I have to use to maintain sanity, but functionality has not been adversly affected. The main difference between this version, and the previous version of firefox has been how tabs are handled. This never really made a difference to me, as I always used the Tabbrowser Entension, but this was the one extension that I can't get to work yet in 2.0. Maybe a new version will come out, soon.

IPods. Now with preinstalled malware!

Apple is now reporting that some recent video ipods are already preinfected with the RavMonE virus. Naturally, of course this only affects windows. So, if your operating system comes from the Anti-Christ, and you have an ipod, you may want adjust your AV software. Or, you can just go shiny-side out. I find that a good tin-foil hat actually is better than any firewall or AV (that and I also got a router, too).

Sweet Lou's off the Chicago

Lou Pinella is back in the game at the New World Order (Mind-Control Division). He was just hired to manage the Cubs. From 93-2002, he was the manager of the Mariners (watch out for pop-ups), and got them to the play-offs three times. IIRC, all three times, the team choked. Well, I don't see the Cubs getting to World Series anytime soon.

Fall is finally here.

It is now raining in earnest here in Puyallup at 2253 PST. And I have to walk through this to catch the bus tommorow morning. I catually enjoy the sound rain hitting the carport roof. It is rather soothing. For some reason, it never rains when I'm at work. It'll only rain:

  1. If I have the day off, or:
  2. I have to walk an extended distance to get to the bus stop, or
  3. I other wise have to be outside.

There are sometimes when it rains while I'm at work, and I can only conclude that somebody else in the Puget Sound region took the day off.

Ok, this is being written in the Windows Live Writer (beta) on a blogger beta blog. I must be a glutton for punishment. But, then again, I do like a stand-alone application for writing my posts. The playoffs begin

Soon, we will be able to shed our Craniums' Mettalic Protectors. The New World Order, Mind-Control Division has entered the Fall playoffs, and soon the World Series will end, and we'll be able to recycle our hats. Until next Spring of course, when it will be shiny side out again.

WorldNet members-forum and topics.hot

As some (if not most, or all) of the loyal readers of my blog may know, I am also a member of AT&T WorldNet (wikipedia article here). They were my first 'real ISP'. When I bought my computer from Gateway, they included a years free membership in AOHell, and I tried that for all of a month (in my opinion of ISP's, AOHell doesn't count). I've stayed with AT&T all these years (even after I switched ISP's to Comcast) because of AT&T usenet server, and more importantly, the internal newsgroups that were exclusive to AT&T. In that news server, there are two newsgroups that are the subject of this post:
  1. worldnet.members-forum, and
  2. wordnet.topics.hot
(note: these are internal AT&T newsgroups, so it would be pointless for me to link to them, as you would need an AT&T account to access them. Firewalls can be a bitch).

Members-forum (or mf) was originally intended to be a 'water-cooler' type newsgroup, for friendly discussions, trivia postings & what have you. Topics.hot was intended for more 'serious' and controversial discussions (not always political, but a great majority is). Since politics tends to be a very polarizing subject, it is strongly encouraged to keep politically related posts in topics.hot. The problem happens when stuff that belongs in topics.hot gets posted to members-forum. In the past when I've seen this, I just simply posted my reply into the correct newsgroup. Last weekend, I posted to a thread which drew a complaint that it should've gone to the other group, and then somebody else didn't like me replying in another (in my opinion, more appropriate group). I decided to to cancel all my posts to the AT&T news server (I still have usenet access through SuperNews, though), and this weekend, I seriously thought about cancelling my AT&T account.

I have decided to keep my AT&T account. Apparetently, I need Martha's approval before I can leave. Beside's, somebody has to keep Beauregard T. Shagnasty in line.

As to the gentleman who first complained about me posting replies to the other group (calling it talking behind his back), I will respect your wishes and not reply to your posts in other groups. Welcome to my kill-file.

As to the other posters who would post material to the wrong group (usually stuff that should be in topics.hot but is posting it to members-forum), I will not post the reply to the appropriate group. I will report it to abuse instead, and you will risk losing your account.

Note to AT&T: It would behoove you to follow members-forum and topics.hot closely. There are usually only 2-3 people who are the main offenders and TOSing them would to wonders to improve the signal to noise ratio as well as reducing the personal attacks and insults that still occur.

One of my favorite all-time characters....

The Great Cornholio. From Beavis and Butthead. Apparently, it is no longer being shown on MTV (but the DVDs are available). It's too bad. I could always count on the MTV moron-a-thon's to get a good laugh.

String Theory (in a nutshell, sorta)

OK, so The Hot Thing going on in Physics is string theory (flash presentation here, originally pointed out to me by Ditty). In a nutshell, it says that superstrings vibrating in the 10th dimension create all the subatomic particles in this universe (and all the other universes). Now, let's make this easier to understand. Instead of super strings, substitute Noodly Appendages. String theory is nothing more than The Flying Spaghetti Monster revealing Himself to select scientists. Ramen.

A little reality lesson for you......

All of the world's problems can be seen in just a few pixels. Yet another reminder that all of humanity is but a pale blue dot in the cosmos (I actually did read the Carl Sagan book by the same name. You'd be better off with the original Cosmos). With that in mind, all of life's problems pale in comparision. Actually this was taken from the Cassini probe in orbit around Saturn.

One final thought tonight.....

If you can't see The Underpants Gnomes, you haven't had enought coffee, yet. But if you start to feel a draft, perhaps you've had too much.

Football!

At long last, football season is upon us again. Forget college football, I'm talking about the National Football League. No longer must I fear The New World Order, Mind-Control Division. But, alas, I have to work at the $dayjob on Sundays (in fact I have to from opening to closing), so I can only catch the fourth quarter of of the evening game (btw the Manning/Manning game was a dandy. Well, at least the last quarter of it). But thank goodness for Monday Night Football. The boss does know that if I have to work on Sundays, I better get Monday night off. Or else.

Five years ago....

Five years ago today (yes, I know it's bit on the late side for this, but I had to work today), I got out of bed, flipped the TV on only to see the news about the first tower being hit. A few minutes later, I saw the second plane hit. I had to leave to go to work (I worked in downtown Seattle at the time, and I took a while to get there by bus). While on the bus to Seattle, I heard of the plane hitting the Pentagon (and I called my brother to put the news on), and of the collapse of the two towers. When I got to work, I received confirmation that the towers had collapsed (at work, I really don't have access the news media, and I had to rely on hearsay and the telephone). My boss showed up, and about an hour after our arrival, building management announced that the Westlake Center (I was in retail at the time) was closing for the day. After going home, I finally saw what had happened in New York, and the reality had dawned on me. Terrorists had struck America. America is a free country, and because of that, there are those who want to see America destroyed. Unfortunately (for them), it will take a lot more than four jetliners to do it.

I once heard it said that wars over religion were basically wars over who has the better invisible friend.

RIP Crocodile hunter

Steve Irwin has passed away. Also here. When I first got cable TV, and saw the Animal Planet channel, it mainly was Flipper reruns and The Corocodile Hunter. I looked forward to his appearances on The Tonight Show and on Late Nite With Conan O'Brien, laughing my ass off everytime he was on. There was one particular appearance when he took down and tagged Conan O'Brien like he was a crocodile that will stand out for a long while.

I will miss him.

Another reason why not to shop at Radio Shack

I used to like Radio Shack. They always had all the cables, connectors, and other miscellaneous knick-knacks that any wanna-be geek who didn't have way of getting cable TV in his room without snaking a cable from his roommate's room. And come the Christmas Season, they always had the kick-ass RC toys. That was a few years ago. Then they shifted there strategy. Now it's just cell phones, and a bunch of overpriced big-tickets items that you could for less than half the the price (without even going on to the Internet) by just looking around.

And now they've stooped to firing people by e-mail. If you're going to fire/downsize someone, then at least have the decency to say it in person. Treating your employees like they're burdens and inconviences will not do anything to improve the bottom line (demoralized employees are not that productive).

A letter to Soundtransit

(CC'ed to main@soundtransit.org)

I would like to drop you a line on the quality of your service, and in particular, your operators. I've never had reason before to complain about Pierce Transit operators or the Soundtransit routes they operate. But let's talk about the King County Metro operators. My first ride today was on the route 550 from Seattle to the Bellevue Transit Center. I assumed that all buses when they make stops at Transit Centers, they actually go into the transit center to make passenger drop offs (as previous experience on 564 has shown me). The route 550 (which I had never ridden before) didn't actually stop at the transit center, and since I don't know the 'lay of the land' in Bellevue, I wasn't aware where I was initially, and so I got off the bus right before it pulled out. Please tell the driver that I can do without the dressing down and the rude comments. That is inappropriate, unprofessional, and in most other occuptations, grounds for on-the-spot termination (not to mention that agencies, government and otherwise, do get sued on quite a regular basis for crap like this).

After concluding my business at Bellevue, had to take the 564 to Puyallup. The coach I got on was #9024, boarding at the Bellevue Transit Center. As we pulled out, I heard him mutter something about Friday afternoon traffic, which is understandable. The commute during rush hour is never a walk in the park. As we went through the transit centers en route to Puyallup, I noticed that nobody could hear what the dirver was saying over the intercom. That wasn't an issue until we got to the Sumner Train Station, when the driver apparently asked if there was anybody on the bus who wanted to get off at Sumner. There where two passengers sitting behind me who wanted to get off, but didn't hear the driver's question over the intercom (note: muttering is not an acceptable form of communication). They were not amused when the bus drove by he sumner train station without stopping. The driver did stop the bus a couple of blocks away form the train station, but i doubt my fellow passengers were able to make their connections. I then proceeded to the front of the bus, as the driver appeared to be havin navigation issues. In between his profanity laced tirade about the route (and how he should've already been home), his job, and how he's never going to drive a 564 route, he was able to get back on the freeway and get to South Hill. In my profession, I'm in a position of management, and if I see any of my employees as 'lost' as this driver, I would make see to it that they knew the task at hand, and how to perform it. That's basic management. If I heard my employees complaining to customers about how they don't like their job, I would see to it that would be their last day on the job. I've heard the rumors that Metro drivers on Soundtransit routes can be jackasses. These two drivers today only reinforce that opinion.

Happy Birthday, Beauregard T. Shagnasty

My happy Birthday message to you was transmitted last night via the New World Odrer, Mind-Cntrol Division ( aka AT&T Ellen Norberg), which/who then relayed it to the blue-tooth enabled Black Helicopters, and these have finally been relayed the various Mind-Control devices at play in you home (ie the subliminal psycho-troninc, background programing in Firefox, the Mind-Control chips located in your motorcycle helmet [where they are strategically positioned to defeat you AFDB], and the chip located on your motorcycle seat [thusly positioned to neutralize any nomex boxer shorts]). I've sent you a new package of shorts. You can pick them up in Belgium.

You may not notice this, but I migrated the blog from blogger to blogger beta. Really the only difference I see so far is that instead of using my blogger id to sign in, I now use my google id to sign in. What troubled webs we weave with a simple hardware upgrade...

[Sorry if this looks different form my normal posts, but the Blogger for Microsoft Word plugin is having issues tonight].

Ok, this all started out as an attempt at a hardware upgrade. I wasn’t going for all the latest bling-bling. Just a better video card. Then I realized that I had to get a beefier power supply for it, as I was getting crashes and reboots while playing Flight Simulator 2004. So I put a 300w power supply in. Then I realized the new power supply doesn’t have a fan. Heat was building up, and I was getting crashes and reboots while playing Combat Flight Simulator 3. Solution:

  1. With 300w power supply and Radeon 9250 installed (actually the easy part), take side off the computer tower.
  2. Take nightstand fan off of nightstand.
  3. Set fan next to tower, pointing at the processor and video card.
  4. Turn fan on, and set to maximum.
  5. Finally enjoy your games with better graphics and no more reboots.

I know it doesn’t look pretty. But it works. Or better yet, the next time I go by a CompUSA store, I’m just going to run away screaming, “Get Thee Hence, Satan!”

The lesson I’ve learned for this is that there are three ways to part with your money:

  1. Gambling is the quickest.
  2. Women are the most fun (generally).
  3. And IT is the surest,

Ramen.

For once, an honest man gets his due

That homeless guy in Detroit who returned $21,000 so far has gotten over $4,000 from across the country.  My hat goes off to him.  Honesty does have its rewards.  Too bad not every one is capable of doing the Right Thing (like politicians and elected officials, for example).

The obvious being restated.

I know this is restating the obvious, but Lance Bass is gay.  Who would’ve figured?

A bunch of stuff in one post.

A lot has happened this week:

  1. So I added a second monitor today. I should’ve done this a long time ago (btw, I ditched the Nvida video card for an ATI Radeon 9250. Yes, I know I’m going with the cheap-ass, budget series, but I can’t afford top-of-the-line components). Out-of-the-box, it has two ports: one vga 9for crt monitors, and a dvi for lcd monitors. Since I have a dvi to vga adapter (from the original AIW Radeon that was the first to get yanked), it was simple matter to add a second monitor. I can now run the TV application in the second monitor, and use the first monitor for important stuff, like writing blog entries.

  2. The Anti-Christ has officially ended support for Windows 98/ME. This means no more patches, updates, or support. You’re on your own. Windows update is still up (as of this morning, when I was able to check it from my Mom’s computer, who still run WinME).

  3. The history of Windows. From the Anti-Christ itself.

  4. For once today, I was able to get a day off with out my boss trying to call me in. After being told no three days in a row, I guess they got the point. I don’t mind coming to work (in fact I look forward to it). But, when I’m not the schedule, I do make plans, and I like to follow through on them. I’m willing to work six-day weeks, and go sun-up to sun-down, but it needs to put on the schedule.

  5. The Hobby Shop in the South Hill Mall is now closed. Bob and Ray, the owners, are my best friends, and I think I’ve single-handedly funded their retirements with all the models I’ve purchased and ruined over the years. They say they will reopen in a while (either in downtown, or on South Hill).

Coincedence or??????

Is it me, or does Davy Jones look too much like Kit Fisto? Perhaps it is possible for Jedi to still have careers after getting killed by the Sith.

The Mariners are winning?!?

The Northwest Regiment of The New World Order, Mind-Control Division are at 18-7 this month. Overall they’re .513 and two games out of the division lead. It almost makes the game interesting. Wait a minute… <changes Tin-Foil hat>….. It’s still a boring game.

The Anti-Christ is in the news again

The Anti-Christ is getting sued over the Windows Genuine Advantage fiasco. I can tolerate Product Activation and ensuing telephone call to India every time I rebuild my system. But calling home every day is going too far. If my operating system is legitimate when I activate it, how is it going to become pirated the next day?

Oh, and IE 7 Beta 3 is out.

371 uselss fact and other stuff.

Here are 371 totally useless facts.  I make no guarantee for accuracy.  But then again, Elvis does love and Belgium doesn’t exist.  Speaking of Belgium not existing, one should also be on the lookout for the Black Helicopters, and be shiny side out.

To all the Dads out there....

I hope you have a happy Father's Day. Anybody with the right hardware in their shorts can be a father, but it takes a special person to be a Dad. I think I'll give mine a call.

Microsoft is at it again.......

I saw this over on slashdot. It’s just plain stupidity on the part of The Anti-Christ, if you ask me. For those of you who aren’t running a recent copy of Windows, The Anti-Christ requires you to ‘validate’ your Windows installation with Windows Genuine Advantage before you can download, say security updates. The problem is, after you’ve validated, WGA will still call home daily. This wouldn’t be the first time they’re gotten into trouble (like here). Activation is one thing. I can live with that (after all, they’re just trying to make sure that your software is used only on your computer. If they wanted you to share it with the world, then Windows would’ve been released under the GPL, like Linux). But there is a difference. Activation is a one time deal. WGA is every single farking day. That’s going too far.

Laser Guided Kitty

So I was at my Mom’s house Saturday.  She gave a mini-flashlight (I don’t know where she got it; probably mail order) that also had a laser pointer on it.  My roommate’s cat will recover.  Eventually.  But she needs the exercise.

A Half-Arsed Review of WMP 11

I tried the new Windows Media Player 11 recently.  Hated it.  Out of the box, the default view is the thumbnail view (the view that you experience when you install Windows XP out of the box.  My first change is to set to ‘icon’).  It took me some time to get it to display my playlists without the thumbnails.  Another issue I have is how the items are arranged.  Yes, I know they’re arranged alphabetically, but I could do without the prominent categorization (that’s the best way I could put it.  The wikipedia article describes it better than I could).

I like the to panes.  I like that category trees.  It is much faster for me to navigate my mp3 library and go from one song to another in Windows Media Player 10.

Or I could just wipe my drive and go back to Windows ME.  Microsoft is still supporting it until July 11.

How to make an ATI TV Wonder Pro work in Windows ME

Ok, I should probably stick with Windows XP, but what can I say? I'm a glutton for punishment, and I like 'going retro'. That being said, the driver cd that comes with the ATI TV Wonder Pro only has drivers for Windows XP. The instruction manual that comes with it has instructions for Windows ME (and on the box, it says that it will work with WinME), but there are a couple of drawbacks. The main one is that the instructions for WinME installation refer to a directory on the CD-Rom that no loonger exists. OK, so here's how to make it work:

Go to the ATI website, and download the software here. Put your ATI cd into your computer's cd-rom drive, when the installation program starts, exit out. First, run the program "mmc-8-1-0-0-dao-mdac.exe". This will run and end silently. Then, run the program "tv_wonder_pro_wdm.exe". When this program runs, it will prompt you to restart your computer. So, restart it, idiot. When it restarts, right-click on 'My Computer', and then click on the 'device manager' tab, and see the 'pci multimedia device'. It may not be named that (to be honest, I really can't remember what it's called, but you'll know what I'm talking about, as it will be the item with the yellow question mark by it). Right-click on the item, then click on 'properties', then the tab 'driver'. Now, click on the button 'update driver' (or, it could be 'find driver'. I'm not sure). The next window that comes up, click on button 'specify location'. Make sure the box marked 'removable media' is checked. Click 'next', and windows should find the driver off the cd-rom. WHen it finds it, windows will install the driver automatically. You'll get a bunch of rude messages from windows about missing files (after all, this cd was originally meant for windows xp, remember). Just click on 'skip file', and move on. Afterwards, your TV card dirvers should be installed (it should work, I did it twice on my system). Now, install the program "mmc-8-9-0-0.exe". Reboot, rinse, repeat.

Ramen.

Window Vista Requirements released

The Anti-Christ has released the requirements for Windows Vista. I'm shocked. My six-year old system can fill the requirements. Just barely, though.

More hardware stuff

Since I put a new video card and tv tuner in my tower, I had my eye out for a DVD burner. In particular, this one. Since my computer is not the newest (I'm still running a PIII, 866 megahertz), I look for hardware that backwards compatible with Windows ME (I still run this OS on occaision, like right now. Just because I can), as well as Windows XP. I finally broke down and bought it today. Since I have an idiot-proof tower (courtesy of Gateway), it a cinch to swap out and install new components in my tower, this was no exception. Software installation was just as quick and painless. Now off to do what everynew DVD burner ought to be doing: downloading Knoppix.

Ramen. (I have to add that since I got alt.religion.pastafarianism added to AT&T WorldNet news servers).

Software Plug (well, sorta)

For my desktop wallpaper, I usually use something that’s astronomy themed (mainly from here, with a lot of good pictures).  But, I recently discovered an automated process that will change my picture daily.  The Astronomy Picture of the Day website has a program for Windoze, that will do it automatically (available here).  The only drawback is it will call home daily (to NASA) to get the next picture, but compared to what the NSA is doing to our phone conversations, this is nothing.

Goodbye Radeon, Hello Nvidia

For the past five years, my video card has been the ATI All-In-Wonder Radeon.  It wasn’t a bad card, but it I felt it was time to replace it.  I noticed at CompUSA that they had a Predator GeForce MX400 Plus, (which, when you install, your computer will tell you what it really is, and Nvidia GeForce 4 MX 4000) for only $49.99.  I paid over $300 for the AIW Radeon when I bought it new in 2001, and that was only a 32 mb card.  Now, they had a 128 mb card for 1/6th that price.  I’m no fool.  I bought the card.  But that brought up another issue.  No TV tuner.  Fortunately, right across the aisle from the video cards were the TV tuner cards. So I grabbed a ATI TV Wonder Pro.  Got them home, popped the tower open and installed the cards.  It took about 3-4 tries before I got all the cards seated and positioned so they were not conflicting with each other.  After installing all the software (I just ignored the software cd that came with the predator and downloaded the driver directly form Nvidia).

All in all, I’m impressed with the performance over the old ATI.  When I play FS 2004,  I’m  impressed with the performance improvement.  The default flight is from SeaTac airport, heading northbound.  With the old card, the scenery was ok, but could be better.  With the new card, I can see Seattle, Bellevue, and a whole lot more.  Combat Flight Simulator 3 no longer skips or hangs when I’m dogfighting or blowing somebody to smithereens.  Not that the AIW Radeon is a bad thing.  I won’t even throw it out.  I’ve already found a home for it and it will still provide satisfying service for quite some time).

More fun with Knoppix...

OK, so I ordered the Knoppix 5.0 DVD. Only $5.24. Big Mistake. Very Big Mistake. Very Buggy. Wouldn't connect to the Internet at all. But, still I got to try a Knoppix DVD distro without having to shell out $80.00 for a DVD Burner.

Afterward, I noticed in the cheat codes for the Knoppix 4.0.2 CD (which does work), and one of them was knoppix bootfrom=/dev//knx.iso, whick basically says to look for the .iso image on your hard drive, and then boot off of that. So I downloaded the dvd .iso, made a note of it's location, and it works. Also, since the image is actually running off the hard drive, performance is significantly speeded up, as you don't have to use the CD-Rom (which even in a 56x drive, still has a slower seek time than your hard drive). This also give you the added advantage of freeing up your Cd drive, too. Ramen.

Happy Anniversary

Yes, I know, I’m a wee bit on the late side, but:

Happy Anniversary, Ditty and Ernie!

Note to President Bush: It is possible to pay off the deficit.

Nigieria settles its debt. If a corrupt African country can get out of debt, then why can't a corrupt North American country?

KISS goes mainsleaze and spams me!

Up to this evening I considered myself a soldier in the KISS Army.  Not anymore.  This evening the 4 spamming buttfucks decided to use my email inbox as an advertising medium.  This is why I will never be a KISS Fan again.  The cripple, the Jew, and the two substitutes, can go suck it for all I care now.  This is far worse than any other spam (look at all the X-HTMLM headers, which btw is reason enough that email should be plain text-only).  Even the virii that people try to send me doesn’t have all this crap in it.  I would block them for spamming me, but I already had a block on 38.0.0.0/8 (side note to cogentco.com:  bouncing abuse reports = Not A Good Thing).

Anyway, straight from their buttholes is the fresh, steaming turd, in all it’s glory:
