I'm not dead yet

Sorry if you all missed me the past week. I decided to try yet another attempt at dual booting ME/XP. I did pretty well. I had ME going for about a week, and I got my new Wi-Fi card working in both systems. But I went back to XP. I like an OS that won't crash on you every thirty minutes just because it feels like it (what was The Anti-Christ thinking?). And don't get me started on Vista either. That's just a piece of shit. XP just works. Period. Well, there is the new version of SuSE out. I may try that one...

And some other thoughts:

• Ernie Jurick isn't really bald. He's just such a devout Pastafarian that he tonsured himself. Ramen.
• I'm not the only person to leave AT&T WorldNet. Some of my friends the I knew on WorldNet are also leaving (in droves apparently). I've found some of them on usenet (thank The Noodly Master that Comcast still offers it).
• Shout out to Beauregard T. Shagnasty: Change your shorts. Twice....
• After almost two years of having to talk to someone in India to activate windows (which isn't that big of an issue, as long as it's installed on only one computer at a time), I was shocked when I called to activate it today, and the computer verified without having to route me to someone.....
• The Mariners still suck. The New World Order (Mind-Control Division) is leaving a lot to be desired this year.

Clearing up the clutter

Bought a wi-fi card for my computer today.  Comcast told me that the cable modem had to go out to the living room outlet our else we would continue to have connectivity issues.  So I get it installed, and when I determined that it works I took out the Ethernet card (still a good card, and I’m going to keep it.  It’s just if I'm not going to use it, I'm not going to keep it installed).  And I moved the modem and the router out to the living room.  So now my new apartment is exclusively Wi-fi.  And now that I got the modem and router out of my room, I have to think of how uncluttered it looks.  I've always had the cable modaem and networking hardware in my room, and it always looked like a jungle with multiple lines stringing in and out of my room.  Behind my computer is still a jungle, but it's less of a mess than before.

Edit:  After noticing the jungle of cables in the living room, I decided to bring everything back into my room.  My roommate never noticed any lag in connectivity (he uses wi-fi exclusively).  I did notice, however, a dramatic slowdown vs. when I was wired.  ANd i figure if it’s all going to stay in my room, it might as well be a wired connection.  Back to square one.  But at least I have wi-fi now, and should the need ever arise again, it can be moved….

It’s been a week

Since I moved in to the new place.  What has happened when I fist moved is that I threw a whole bunch of stuff into boxes and moved it to my mew apartment.  The issue is that most of the stuff stayed in those boxes in my new apartment.  And then when I moved ten months ago, most of that same stuff still stayed in those same boxes.  Since I got tomorrow off, I’ll probably go through them, and start throwing stuff out.  If I’m not even going to bother unpacking it, then it’s probably not necessary…. And I need to rearrange the furniture in my room.  It’s getting to cluttered.  And my apartment is now wi-fi’ed.  My roommate got himself an iMac, and he didn’t want to string an Ethernet cable to his room, so he got a wi-fi router.

It ain’t all that bad

I do read The Consumerist daily, and Comcast is one of the regulars to appear.  Not A Good Thing in general.  But on occasion, Comcast does get it right.  Here’s my experience:  Though three moves, the Comcast technician has always been on time to hook up service at the new place.  In fact they’ve always been within an hour of the beginning of the window.  They were also on time when I upgraded to digital cable and I got high-speed internet.

It ain’t all that bad.  Yes, Comcast does have some bad apples in it, like most companies do.  And I’m not trying to mindlessly shill for them either.  If an employee screws up on company time, then the company is responsible for setting it right.  Usually this means shit-canning the rogue employees and getting some people in there who aren’t incompetent fools (which if Comcast did in the first place, they wouldn’t be the subject of so many Consumerist articles).

If you can’t tell already, the cable guy came here this morning, and we now have TV and Internet at the new apartment.

Edit: 12 hours after I made this post, my high-speed internet falked out, and Comcast will have to come out again and trouble shoot it.  Not that I’m complaining.  We needed to get a hi-def box anyway for the living room……

It is finished!

My part of the move is done. I got all my stuff out of my old apartment and into the new one. Now I just need to clean up the old place, return my keys, and help my brother/roommate move in...

Edit: the clean-up is now done.  Not as cleaned as I would want it, but I did my best.  I even bought extra light bulbs to replace the ones that burnt out (when they first burnt out, I replaced them with CFL’s, and I took them with me when I left).

BTW, when the weather is forecast to be in the nineties perhaps you shouldn’t be out moving/relocating.  I wore a shirt, and I now have a farmer’s tan/sunburn.  Since I was wearing my Seahawks hats at the time, I now have a sunburn line across my forehead.  But, it is done.

I’m still around

I’m just in the process of moving.  The computer will probably get dismantled tomorrow, and therefore my only internet connection will be through my cell phone until next Tuesday, barring Comcast mucking it up.  I’ve gotten a lot of stuff moved over there already, but there’s still a lot more to go…

Summer's finally here

A day off yesterday

I had the day off, and a pay check.  It did rain, but only once.  And my boss didn’t call me in (though he did call me about the slaughter in Boston.  I think Kobe Bryant may have had his penis cut off and handed to him).  I went to Wally World.  And even at Wally World prices, it is possible to spend over $50.00 on socks and underwear.

Firefox 3 is out.  2.9 million downloads in the first eight hours, and the Mozilla servers crashed from the mindless hordes all trying to get there copy.  According to here, currently over 4.5 million copies have been downloaded.  If you haven’t got yours yet, you can get it here:

I’ve been through this once already!

If you’re a loyal reader of this blog, you’ll know that I moved last August.  I went from a three bedroom apartment with a couple of roommates to a one bedroom apartment by myself.  But some developments have come up.  One of my former roommates (who is also my younger brother) was staying with my sister (who just had a baby girl).  He wants to move out (something about a toddler and a baby in the house, and he wants to get this thing called sleep.  It could also be my sister wants him out to turn his room into a nursery).  And then my landlord tells me that there’s a two bedroom apartment available.  So, I told him to apply, and he did.  Today, I called the landlord, and I got the skinny.  He got approved conditionally (basically because I’m never late paying the rent is the only reason why he got approved).  But this all means one thing, and I don’t like it at all:

I’m moving again.  In two weeks.

It all goes through Boston

First, the BoSox won the world series [in The New World Order (Mind-Control Division)].  Then, the New England Patriots get their well-deserved beating in the superbowl.  Well, the one exception is the Bruins (all hail the Red Wings).  But, then there are the Celtics.  This wasn’t just a simple victory.  This was a slaughter.  More like a massacre at 131-92.  Did the Lakers even bother to show up?  The next thing to see is if the Sonics will stay in Seattle next year.  But I’m not a basketball fan, so I’m not really following the saga.

Happy Father’s Day

I called my father and wised him a happy Father’s Day.  I then told him to clean the basement (like Grandma wants him to).  For father’s day, I got him a cell phone that had Bluetooth on it (his current phone does not have Bluetooth), as Washington state law mandates that all motorists are to use hands-free devices on their cell phones by July 1.  But he prefers his method of handling phone calls while driving: letting voice mail deal with it.  Oh well.  At least I got him something this year (if you’re wondering what I got Mom for Mother’s Day, I got her a wi-fi router, and I wi-fi’ed her apartment).

How Shocking

That on my commute home from work, I should get the sudden urge to listen to Handel's Water Music. To say that it's raining is an understatement. It's more like a monsoon. And it's cold, too. Where's all this global warning that everyone was talking about?

To prove a point

I commented in Brielle's blog yesterday that I would rather install Windows MEthan install Vista. See the picture....

It turns out to have been a harder thask than I thought. Formatting and setting the hard drives (both of them) is easy. I know how to do it from DOS, but both hard drive manufacturers (Seagate and Western Digital) supllied cd-roms with graphical tools that make it idiot proof (and there's also my copy of g-parted, too....). The tough part actually comes down to the physical shape of my Windows ME disc. And I can't blame that one on The Anti-Christ, either as much as I want to do it. It's just scratched and worn, and it takes three tries to make it work. But I did get a functional install of Windows ME going. And I intend to keep it to commemorate the crappy, half assed job that microsoft has been foisting on us since 95.

Three comcast contractors have been charged with spray-painting and torturing a kitten.  While this isn't as bad as two drag-racing vans seriously injuring a three year-old girl, it still does not bode well for a company's reputation when your employess regularly engage in conduxt that results in posssible felony charges, and/or multiple postings to consumerist, then perhaps you should really think twice about your current hiring proceures.....  Then again, usually when it's posted to the consumerist, something usually has already gone terribly wrong.

Making the switch

Since spring of last year, I've been using a Samsung T619 as my cell phone.  This was my first contract (as in a post-paid, sign your life away to T-Mobile, and sell your mother's soul to the devil) phone in many years.  My previous phones (a Nokia 6030 and a Nokia 3595 were prepaid).  It has given much good service, and I enjoyed my first 'flip' phone.  But it has its limits, and I wanted something that I could put .mp3s on from my computer (and use them as my ringtone, which I cannot do with my current phone).  Earlier this year, my boss acquired a surplus phone from one of his relatives, and offered it to me.  And I took it.  So my new(?) phone is a Motorola Motorizr Z3.  Compared to the old phone, it has a memory card slot, so I can dump a whole load of .mp3s on it (and I can now use the Lumberjack Song for my ringtone without having to buy it from T-zones.  Stick it to the Man!), the camera has a flash (a darn good one too.  Brighter than my flashlight), and I can use the gmail application without having to open my phone's browser (a must, since I almost use my gmail address exclusively...)

So, what did you do today?

Today was my day off.  My one day off this week.  My one say to sleep in and do absolutely nothing.  And, what did I do?  Got up even earlier than normal.  And then I headed out.  My boss's cousin was having computer problems, and so I was asked to fix it.  Multiple virus infections, a couple of trojan horses, and a 'hot version' of windows that spat put annoying pop-ups every five minutes (thanks to The Anti-Christ).  It took me three hours to bring it under control (most of that was spent downloading an acceptable AV and lecturing Billie on the virtues of Shiny Side Out, and practicing safe hex).  After running an av scan (and tell him that his supposed AV program in an of itself was malware), I got his system locked down. 

Then off to his sister's house.  There, I secured the Wi-Fi (so they won't be providing free internet access to their neighbors). then added another computer to their home network.  In the past two weeks, I've 'Wi-Fi'ed three houses, deloused two computers, and nuked one computer from orbit.  And I still need to finish upgrading one computer's hardware.

When you call for tech support, your call is usually routed to India.  When an Indian has computer problems, he comes to me........

I really don't have time to watch TV.  Between work and commuting to and from work, I really don't follow TV anymore (with the possible exceptions of Mythbusters, Dirty Jobs and Monday Night Football).  However, as a fovar to those of you who do watch TV, here's the list of shows that got canceled, and the list of shows that made it.

Do Not Panic

Ok. so you're sitting down to your computer, and you turn it on and nothing happens.  What do you do?  Aside from cursing at The Anti-Christ, and or installing Linux, here's 10 steps you can take.  I myself am partial to the recovery console option (in fact I have it installed as a boot option).  It's easy to put the recovery console on your hard drive.  Just put your windows xp cd in the drive (I'm assuming your cd drive is 'd:'). Then go to 'start', 'run' and type 'd:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons'.  Then the next time you boot your computer, you'll have the option of either booting into windows or into the recovery console.

On the way home from work,

I'm on the bus going home from work. Generally, I keep to myself and ignore world around me. So this man sits near me and asks of not to snitch on him he he opens his bottle. I don't say anything, I just get up and go to another seat. I don't know what he had in his bottle, but judging by how the bus driver told him he can't have an open container on the bus and ordered him off, one can probably assume that it wasn't diet coke he was drinking.... (yes, Pierce Transit is dry).

Had he not asked me not to  snitch, he probably could've gotten away with it. This is one of those areas where I could really care less what you're doing, but asking me to cover-up is crossing the line.

For the second year in a row, I had to pay when I filed my tax return.  Something I learned from my father (more importantly, his run-ins with the IRS) is to always square away your dealings with the IRS quickly.  It's never easy, but in the long run, it's the wisest move to toe the line when it comes to taxes.....

Having said that, Al Sharpton owes about $1.5 million...... I may have gotten into trouble in past with debt, but not that deep.

Cinco de May has come and gone.  For me, it was just another Monday.  I grew up on my Grandpa's dairy farm, and I grew up knowing that Cinco de Mayo was not a Mexican holiday, but the name of a holstien steer......

A new way to manage tabs

In firefox, I have been using the tab mix plus extension to manage my tabbed browsing (an extension like this is essential when viewing sites like Fark).  Before, I was using the tabbrowser extension, but it was never updated for Firefox 2 when it was released, so I had to switch.  Today, I went to the tabbroswer extension web-site and a new version has been published.  Not only is TBE now compatible with FIrefox 2, but it looks like it'll work with 3 as well.  The main change in this release is that instead of one extension, it is now four different extensions: Informational Tab, Multiple Tab Handler, Source Viewer Tab, and Tree Style Tab.  It actually makes sense to have this split into four extensions, given all that TBE was trying to originally do, and the complications that sometimes resulted (even the TBE website itself recommended that you do not use it (it was, and still is, created only for the author's personal convenience).  I myself used it in the past, and I will use it now, since I like the features and the power it has, but if you're looking for a tab manager, go with tab mix plus first.  It won't cause you nearly as much grief if you're a simple user.  If you're a glutton for punishment, and you've done a recent full system back-up, go ahead and try it...

Texting/SMS Dictionary

I've previously asked if I was the last person to use proper grammar/spelling whenever I text or sms/mms people (actually, a good chunk of the posts on this blog now originate from my cell phone).  Anyway, if you've ever wondered what people are saying when they're testing you, here's a handy dictionary.

A wee bit faster......

I've noticed of late that whenever I used Firefox (yes, it's my spreadfirefox link), it's always seemed slow.  Slow to load up, and then half the web hung up in some form or another.  To the point that I started dabbling with Safari, Opera, and (Gasp!) Intranet Exploder.  So today, I decided to do something about it.  When I started up Firefox today, I went through my extensions.  All 59 of them.  And uninstalled a third of them (I never used them anyway, and many of them were out-dated).  Then I went through and got rid of all my themes (I don't know why I got them to begin with, since I just use the default theme, anyway).  And firefox is a faster now.  When I fix friends' computers, the most common cause of problems is the '3 stooges syndrome' at start-up.  And firefox can get that issue as well, apparently......

• My sister will have a girl.

• One of my former co-workers has also announced that she will be experiencing the birth spasm soon, but she hasn't said what she will be having.  I'm assuming that she will be giving birth to a fully developed Midget in Pirate Regalia.  Ramen.

The father of chaos theory has passed away at the age of ninety.  Meteorology will never be the same.  His main contribution was to prove that small events (like a butterfly flapping its wings) can set off enormous events (like a tornado in Texas).

Personally, I don't need his theories to predict the weather.  I just take a look at my schedule at work.  If I'm off, it's going to rain.  If I have to work, it'll be sunny.....

Sometimes, it's just the little things....

This past week or so has been a bit too stressful for my liking.  I'm not going into details (possibly later, but for now I'm not posting such thing to the internet).  Then I get an email from my cousin out of the blue.  And my week is made.  Sometimes, it just the little things in life that will brighten your life.

Opening Day...

It was yesterday for The New World Order (Mind-Control Division).  I had a fresh roll of Aluminum foil ready for my hat so I could watch the Mariners cut off and hand the Texas Rangers their balls.  But a co-worker was sick, and other co-worker who was called in to replace her was sick.  And so I get called in.  And I missed the game.  Don't get me wrong.  The New World Order (Mind-Control Division) is still an evil organization, but there activities can be observed, provided the proper safeguards are observed.

Here we go again

I'm in the middle of a three day off in a row stretch.  I've got 240 gigs of hard drive space available.  It's about time for me to wipe and rebuild my system (I do it on a regular basis to clear out bugs, virii, and spyware).  I think I'll try to dual-boot with Windows ME and WIndows XP.  Again (I used to do it all the time).

I made the switch

Ok, I just switched to the new Firefox 3 Beta. I do not recommend doing this on any 'mission critical' computer you may have (standard cautions still apply about using beta software in any situation still apply). So far, I'm impressed with the new interface. It does load quicker (although that could also be because I don't have 53 extensions installed in it like I did with Firefox 2....). This post is being written in it (via the scribefire extension).

All in all, I like it enough to make the switch. Your mileage may vary.....

P.S. I'll switch the spreadfirefox button in the blog. Eventually.

Edit #2:  I went back to Firefox 2.  There is a reason why it is still beta.  I like all the new features (like the faster loading times), but right now it is still a wee bit too unstable for my tastes.  I'll try it again when the RC's come out.  Firefox 2 is still way better than IE, though.

At long last, I can now post to the blog with Safari for windows.  I tried it before with the previous version, but I could never actually write an entry.  While it is something that may come in useful in the future ( like if Hell freezes over, I lose my balls, and I buy a Mac & decide not to use Firefox).  In the meantime, I think I'll continue to use Windows Live Writer, which also happens to be the only Windows Live product that won't make your computer levitate in the air, spin around, and spew forth split pea soup.

Roger Bryant is no more

Not really. I'm still here, but if you're trying to reach me at my att.net email addresses, good luck.  I just canceled my AT&T WorldNet account.  They were going to raise the price, and I find it unconscionable to pay close to 8 dollars a month for a piece-of-shit news server and 6 email addresses that don't have that much space.  My 1 gmail address has twice the space that my entire AT&T account has.  And I can access it from my mobile phone, something I could never do with AT&T.

Good Riddance, Ma Bell.

Some of my past employment has been in the food-service industry.  One of the many constants in this profession is the occasional visit from the local health department.  As much as an annoyance that they can be, they are there to keep people safe (being responsible for an outbreak of salmonella, e. coli, or hepatitis will make anyone's day).  Anyway, a restaurant in Georgia has just set the record.  For the lowest score on an inspection.  The health department may be a pain in the ass, but food poisoning is even worse.....

Happy Anniversary

7 years ago today was the Nisqually Earthquake.  At the time, I was working in the Westlake Center.  I was at work when the shaking started.  By the time it ended, I was already out of the building, and proceeded to return to work.

I first noticed the shaking when I heard a rhythmic crashing (which was the sound of the downtown Nordstrom crashing into an adjoining building).  Due to the monorail being right next to the building, I at first thought that the shaking was the monorail until I realized the entire 24 story office tower was shaking along with the mall.  During the day after the earthquake, a disaster was declared, and Metro therefore provided service for free the rest of the day (moot point since I had a pass at the time....).  The damage at my apartment was minimal, just a lam and a few models got knocked over).  My younger brother (who was my roommate at the time) was asleep at the time and his bed was right next to his CD shelf).  He woke up awash in a sea of CD's.

A little trip to the grocery store gone terribly wrong

So, I went to the supermarket today (shoulda gone to Wally World, but I didn't want to ride the bus on my day if it was possible).  So I went to this establishment called Saar's Marketplace.  The only thing it has going for it is it's in walking distance of my apartment (well, there's also the Safeway 16 blocks down Pacific Avenue, but that's too far to walk with a load of groceries....).  So I go into Saar's and the first thing I notice is the meat department.  They may have some great deals, but the first thing I noticed was the odor.  It does not bode well for any meat department/butcher shop if the first thing I smell is something rotting.  I don't know what it was, but that was an immediate turn-off (all the items on my list were non-perishable, so I didn't need to walk out right away).  After making my purchase, I headed home, and noticed the receipt.  Being a devout pastafarian, I do consume ramen on a regular basis (the fact that it's dirt cheap doesn't hurt either).  What does hurt is when I'm charged 5¢ more per package than what the shelf price is and I'm charged for 10 packages rather than the 6 that I bought.  This isn't the previous time that I got screwed at the check-out either.  About a month ago, I bought a loaf of bread and some other items there.  When I got home, I noticed that they had so conveniently decided that while I should pay for the bread, I really didn't need it, and they did not bag it.

I can excuse the smell of rot and decay in the meat department (well, not really, but that's the job of the health department, and a complaint to them will be forthcoming).  I will not excuse malice and incompetence (there is no difference between the two really) from the cashier.  And I will never shop at Saar's again.

So much hard work

To get an undefeated regular season.  And it's good only for second place.  Tom Brady gets his Well-Deserved Beating, coming from the usual source of quarterback beatings: the defensive line (in this case the Giants).

This also marks the first time that a wild-card team has even made it to the Super Bowl (not a small feat in and of itself).  It just makes winning it that much more a sweeter victory.  ALL HAIL ELI MANNING!

I do have to admit that after the Seahawks got beat by the Packers, I was rooting for New York and Indianapolis to make it the Super Bowl, so I could watch the Manning Bowl, but fate did not dictate that.

Now to go follow the NHL, and in a couple of months you'll need to put your tin-foil hats back on because The New World Order (Mind-Control Division) will be starting up again.....

Since 1928, neither the President nor the Vice-President are running for the presidency.  Now if I recall my history correctly 1928 is the year Herbert Hoover was elected to the white house, and the next year was the start of the Great Depression.

From the ashes.....

Netscape is dying.  After Friday, February 1st, there will not be nay more updates.  It's was a long journey, but in all reality Netscape has long been dead.  I didn't get my 1st computer until November 2000 (the computer is still going strong.  In fact, this post is being written on it), and by then, AOHell has acquired it, and the source code had been released as open source.  Almost as an afterthought, Gateway had put the installer for Netscape 4.06 on it which I installed.  Compared to IE 5.5/6, it was about on par.  Unfortunately, it was also running Windows ME (thank you to The Anti-Christ, and I had some other issue necessitating a wipe and rebuild of my hard drive, and the installer was very will hidden on my restore set.  So I lost it, and I used IE for several years.

In the meanwhile, the Mozilla foundation had been founded and the code that started out to be Netscape was now being released as the Mozilla suite (Netscape 6/7 is essentially the Mozilla suite with a buncha of AOHell crap bundled into them).  From the Mozilla Suite, it was decided to develop just a browser (rather than a full internet suite), and this became phoenix, then firebird (when I first started using it), and now you all now it as firefox.  Another effort to produce a dedicated email client result in Thunderbird.  Along the way, the Mozilla suite was discontinued, but it's descendant still lives on in the form of SeaMonkey.

Netscape is dying they say.  I say Netscape died when AOHell bought them out.  But Netscape still lives.  Firefox and Thunderbird are it's great-great grandchildren descended from a long line going all the was back to 1994 and before.

BTW, Netscape and Internet Explorer both can trace there lineage in one form or another to NCSA Mosaic.  If you're really feeling adventurous, you can give it a try by downloading it here.  Otherwise, you're better off by downloading and using Firefox.
